Crown lengthening is a procedure commonly used to save a tooth that otherwise has to be extracted because of a deep cavity or deep fracture below the gum line.  As a minor surgical procedure under local anesthesia , crown lengthening involves making a small incision in the gum tissue around the target teeth to allow access for shaping the hard tissue and lowering the gum line.   This allows for more accessible tooth structure that can be used as a foundation for a crown.  The new hard and soft tissue contour would then allow for a healthier physiological space between the bone and the margin of the crown.  If this physiological space is not respected, the crown may not hold very well and can detach.   In cases of poor planning and post-treatment care, chronic sensitivity and inflammation can follow which could lead to gum disease.  Generally, a 5-6 week healing period is necessarybefore returning back to the dentist for the crown preparation.
