Crown Lengthening Beverly Hills

As the leading Beverly Hills periodontist, the offices of Beverly Hills Periodontics & Dental Implant Center are able to help you with your periodontal needs, whether they are cosmetic, restorative, or a combination of the two. After all, everyone can recognize the charm of a perfectly proportioned smile. One of the ways to improve the length of your teeth and your overall smile is to cosmetically change the teeth and/or gums into more pleasing shapes. Crown lengthening in Beverly Hills is one way to accomplish this goal.

Reasons for Crown Lengthening

  • Restorative. If the teeth are damaged from periodontal disease, your teeth may be broken beneath the gum line, and the crown lengthening procedure can save a tooth that otherwise has to be extracted because of a deep cavity or deep fracture below the gum line.
  • Cosmetic. If the patient has a “gummy” smile, where the gum tissue makes the teeth look unnaturally short, removing this excess gum tissue can restore a balanced, healthy and beautiful look to the patient’s smile.

What Does Crown Lengthening Involve?

As a minor surgical procedure performed under local anesthesia, this periodontal disease treatment involves making a small incision in the gum tissue around the target teeth to allow access for shaping the hard tissue and lowering the gum line. This allows for more accessible tooth structure that can be used as a foundation for a crown. The new hard and soft tissue contour would then allow for a healthier physiological space between the bone and the margin of the crown.

Once the procedure is completed, dissolvable sutures are placed to help secure the teeth into the gums and jawbone.

Crown Lengthening Recovery

Generally, crown lengthening recovery requires a 5-6 week healing period before returning back to the dentist for the crown preparation. You will be given a prescribed painkiller, and an antimicrobial mouth rinse to help reduce any potential bacterial infections. You will come in for a follow-up appointment approximately two weeks after your crown lengthening procedure to evaluate your healing and to check that there are no signs of infection. The surgical site is completely healed within approximately 2-3 months. As always, be sure to practice proper dental hygiene, as it is key to insuring the maximum life of your new crown(s).
